Basic Flower Gardens – Twelve Months of Flowers
Alpines: Plant seedlings or rooted cuttings except for pot grown plants which can go in anytime. Water plants in if soil is dry.
Chrysanthemums: Leave them in the garden over winter.
Dahlias: Cut down the top growth as soon as it is blackened by frost, then lift dahlias carefully with a fork. Stand upside down in frost-free place for a week to dryout then place in boxes, cover with slightly damp peat after dusting the crowns with flowers of sulphur, before storage.
Examine tubers several time during the winter, if shrivelled plunge in a bucket of tepid water overnight.
Flowers: Remove annuals before they become bedraggled. Plant out perennials raised from seeds.
Fruit: Order fruit trees and bushes for autumn delivery. Prepare planting sites breaking up the subsoil to ensure drainage. Soil previously occupied by fruit should be chemically sterilised,
add fertiliser into the soil. Control weeds around established trees. Place grease bands around apple and cherry trees to catch winter moths. Pick and store apples and pears as they mature,
pick autumn fruiting strawberries and complete planting runners.
Take gooseberry cuttings, prune unfruitful plum and damson trees after leaf fall.
Herbaceous plants: Begin planting herbaceous perennial. Transplant plants which need moving. Divide and replant clumps of plants eg.achillea’ Prepare ground for spring planting to weather during the winter. Protect tender plants.
Hedges: Prepare sites if this was not done last month, Evergreens should be planted immediately.
Heathers: Sites should have been prepared last month. All kinds of heathers can be planted during this month provided the soil is not frozen or saturated. Soak roots thoroughly if they appear dry. All heathers except lime tolerant species must be planted in acid or neutral soil.
Herbs: Take cuttings of bay, lavender and rue. Divide clumps of chives in mild weather, divide and replant mint. Dig up fennel for forcing under glass.
Irises: Tidy bearded iris beds before winter, remove dead leaves and weeds, trim longer leaves by a quarter. Complete planting bulbous irises in pots.
New Lawns: Mow when grass is 3 inches high. Roll to firm seedlings if loose.
Lillies: Plant or pot as many lillies as possible. Allow lilly stems to die down naturally.
Rhododendrons & Azaleas: Prepare ground for planting and plant new bushes.
Mulch plants which are not making healthy growth with peat or manure.
Trees & Shrubs: Start planting deciduous trees and shrubs towards the end of the month but avoid wet and frosty conditions.
